This article is written for Lightroom Classic, but it seems possible that some tips might also be applicable to LR5. You might want to put your Lightroom catalog and preview files on the MacBook Air's SSD – as per Adobe's recommendation that the catalog should go on a fast drive. My images are on an external HD as is PS5. When it came time to get a new computer, a display like that could serve as a first – or second – display for the new computer. Those would give you a pretty close replacement for the display of a 27" pre-Retina iMac that had gone the trip.

You can find some 27" 2.5K IPS displays with 2560x1440 pixel resolution and near-100% coverage of sRGB for $350 or less. Here you would treat the port as a Mini DisplayPort, ignoring the Thunderbolt 2 aspect.

According to Apple, the system "simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors." Your MacBook Air has a Thunderbolt 2 (Mini DisplayPort) port. Perhaps that's a solution rather than buying a used iMac. BUT I never considered adding an external monitor and mouse. The air is slow as it is, and using PS5 on a 13" laptop isn't ideal. The iMac in question might have an aftermarket SSD, or it might have a 1 TB Fusion Drive that the seller is inaccurately describing as a 1 TB SSD.

  • Have USB 3.0 ports (a good thing the 2011 iMacs had USB 2.0 ones!).Īpple did not offer a 1 TB SSD for either model year.
  • In a year or so from now, when Monterey's successor is out, Adobe's minimum requirement will likely change to Big Sur, leaving these particular iMacs out of luck. Current versions of Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Photoshop require Catalina or higher.
  • Can run Mojave (the last version of macOS that runs 32-bit applications), or Catalina, but not anything higher.
  • Have 1920x1080 pixel screens, not Retina screens.
  • Another possibility was the Late 2012 one. You haven't told us the model year, but in checking "21.5-inch" + "Core i5" + "2.9 GHz" against the MacTracker database, the most recent possibility was the Late 2013 21.5" iMac.

I was looking at this on EBAY: Apple iMac 21.5" Silver i5 2.9GHz 8GB 1TB SSD for about $325.00 with a 1 year warranty from the seller. I notice on EBAY the prices are good for used iMacs. What is the problem with the Air? Is it the speed, or the amount of screen space? If it is just the amount of screen space, you might want to consider getting a 27" monitor, and a desktop keyboard and mouse, and possibly a dock, to use when the Air is at home. I am currently using a 13" Mcbook air and its not the bestir that. I just need something for Lightroom editing and light web surfing. I want to buy a used iMac on a tight budget. The difference between the MBA and a 2013 iMac may not be all that much in real world use.įYI, if you share your maximum budget in these kinds of posts, you may get suggestions that wind up penciling out better performance/value-wise. A 2013 iMac is getting pretty long in the tooth.

But judging by your usage scenario, I would consider getting an external display to use with the MBA. You don't say whether your MBA is Intel or an M1 (I assume it is the former). The one-year warranty is worth something as long as the seller has a good reputation among its customers.

If I was seriously looking at such a Mac, I would also look to other sources such as eBay, private sellers online and used Mac resellers for price comparisons.

I think that their estimates tend to be on the high side for older Macs. As of July 2021 they estimated the retail price between $500-$650. Does this sound reasonable?Īpple iMac 21.5-Inch "Core i5" 2.9 (Late 2013) Specs
